There is a lot of truth in this. If people start to realize that income inequality is regulated and they start to demand from their governments, things will change. It is fascinating to see how the region in Quebec has good infrastructure, relatively low tuition fees and many regulations that protect and help middle and low income parts of the population. It is not that Quebec has a better economic standing than for example Toronto or Vancouver, but the people share the view of an equal society and demand for it.
As another example, Germany has no minimum wage, however since workers are highly organized in Unions, wages are often set by collective bargaining agreements in other sectors of the economy and become then enforceable by law. There is simply no need for a minimum wage set by the central government.

Science provides us with the data showing that upward mobility is very low in the US. So instead of waiting and hoping that “one day I will be CEO if I just work hard”, it is maybe better to demand your rights now? Even if the US system deviated far from a real democracy, it’s people can still have significant power if they would just wake up from the American dream.
